The Keukenhof gardens in the town of Lisse Holland attract large tourist crowds to the tulip fields. It is a classic Dutch garden in the vicinity of the province of South Holland.

In the 15th century, the area which today is the Keukenhof gardens, was pristine nature and property of Jacqueline of Bavaria. In addition to hunting the estate was used to grow herbs for the kitchen. Hence the name Keukenhof (kitchen garden). In 1857, the landscape architect Zocher created the garden plan for the castle of Keukenhof. The English landscape garden, which he created at the time, is still the foundation of the park. At the suggestion of a group of flower bulb growers there, the Keukenhof was established in 1949 as a flower show, giving growers the opportunity to present their plants.

About 90 such growers are responsible for ensuring that every year there are the most beautiful bulbs – such as, for example, daffodils, hyacinths, and Imperial crowns. These especially thrive in sandy soil. About 4.5 million tulips are planted annually, as well as onions in 100 variations. This is what traditionally make up the main attraction at the Keukenhof gardens. The 32-hectare park with 2,500 trees in 87 variations is crossed by 15 kilometres of walking paths. In addition, the Keukenhof features 150 works by 50 artists and is also the largest sculpture park of the Netherlands.

The Keukenhof has since evolved into one of the greatest Dutch tourist attractions. It is a goal for all flower lovers to visit the gardens and also make a purchase.

The garden opens typically in mid March and stays open until mid May, open daily from 8am to 730pm. The main flowering season depends on the weather conditions, usually in mid April.
